By group policy for college computers, pinning applications to the Start Menu and Task Bar permanently is not possible in Windows 7 & 8. After restarting a computer or relogging into the computer the pinned application will revert back. Alternatively, in Windows 7 you can enable the Favorites feature for the Start Menu. In Windows 10 pinning software to the start menu and task bar permanently is possible.
To pin in Windows 10:
- From the Start Menu, right-click on the application you would like to pin.
- Select Pin to Start to pin to the start menu, or select Pin to taskbar to pin to the task bar.

To enable the Favorites in Windows 7:
- Right click the taskbar, then click Properties.

- Click the Start Menu tab, then click Customize…

- Scroll down and check Favorites Menu, then click OK.

- Click Apply then OK.

- From the Start Menu, you can drag applications to the Favorites folder on the right-hand side to easily get to your applications.
