My Computer Stopped Working

If your computer isn't powering on

  1. Check and make sure the surge protector is powered on, there will be a LED indicating it is powered on.
  2. Ensure all power cables are securely plugged in from each outlet and device.
  3. Press the power button on the computer, you will know it is powered indicated by an LED from the power button.image of power button on the dell computer systems on campus.

If your mouse/keyboard and other USB devices isn't working

  1. Check if there is an LED on the device indicating it is powered on.
    • For example, keyboards will typically have the NUMLOCK key on, mouse will have a red light on the bottom, and scanners should have a LED indicating power on
    • For devices that powered by a separate power source (scanners, label printers, etc.), make sure they are connected the surge protector.
  2. Unplug the device affected and securely connect it back to the computer.
    • You may want to try another USB port if needed.

    2. Unplug the docking station USB cable leading to your mobile device, and connect it again to your computer.
  3. Power off the computer, unplug the power cable and all USB devices, once this is done reconnect the cables respectively, and power the computer back on.

If your external monitor isn't displaying an image

  1. Check if the monitor is powered on, there will be an LED on the power button.
    • Depending on the model of the monitor, the LED on the power button may change color, for example, an amber color will indicate it is powered on, but not receiving an image.
  2. Check the video cable, and ensure they are securely plugged in to the computer and the monitor.
    1. If you have a mobile device, you will have a docking station, there is a power switch on back of the dock, flip the switch to O to power it off, and then back to I to power it back onimage of the power switch on the dell monitor docking stations.
    2. Unplug the docking station USB cable leading to your mobile device, and connect it again to your computer.
  3. Power off the monitor and power it back on again, and power off the computer, by pressing the power button.
