What is multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA)?

Multi-factor authentication is an authentication method in which a user is granted access to a system only after successfully presenting two or more pieces of evidence to an authentication mechanism. Two-factor authentication, also called two-step verification, is a type of multi-factor authentication that verifies two factors of identity. MFA and 2FA provide an extra layer of protection that is used to aid in the security of online accounts beyond just a username and password.
